What changed on October 20, 2026. §1 gains a paragraph on interest and money owed to you, because the Service can now record a note receivable. §2 now describes the reminders the app actually shows and where. It no longer claims a reminder "on every screen", which the app has never had, and it no longer quotes reminder wording, which changes as the product improves.

What this page is

Oikos Books is accounting software — a tool that records, organizes, and reports the financial information you enter or connect. It is not a person, not a firm, and not a licensed professional. Nothing it produces is professional advice, and Oikos United LLC does not guarantee that any number it displays is correct, complete, or fit for filing with any tax authority, lender, investor, or regulator.

The full disclaimers below are part of our Terms of Service. You'll also see short, plain-language reminders of these points inside the product where you are most likely to rely on a number. §2 lists where they appear and what each one says, in substance.

1. The disclaimers (canonical text)

No Professional Advice. Oikos Books is a software tool for recording and reporting financial information. It is not tax, accounting, bookkeeping, legal, investment, or financial advice, and it is not a substitute for a qualified professional (such as a CPA, enrolled agent, bookkeeper, tax preparer, attorney, or financial advisor). Oikos United LLC is not a public accounting firm, a tax-preparation service, a registered investment adviser, a broker-dealer, a bank, a lender, or a money transmitter. Any reports, calculations, categorizations, tax or sales-tax figures, projections, summaries, or AI-generated answers the Service produces are provided for your convenience and information only. You should consult a qualified professional before making any financial, tax, accounting, legal, or business decision, and before filing anything with any government authority.

Your Responsibility for Accuracy. You are solely responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and lawfulness of the data you enter into or connect to the Service, and for the accuracy of any books, records, reports, returns, or filings you produce using it. This includes reviewing and verifying every figure before you rely on it, submit it, or share it. Oikos United LLC does not audit, verify, or guarantee your data or your books. The Service may contain errors, may categorize transactions incorrectly, may reflect incomplete or delayed bank data, and may compute tax, sales-tax, or other figures that are wrong for your situation. Automated features — including statement import, auto-categorization rules, receipt reading, and AI-assisted answers — are aids, not authorities; you must review their output. The Service does not guarantee that any figure is calculated in accordance with GAAP, IRS rules, state or local tax law, or any other standard. You remain responsible for maintaining your own records and for compliance with all tax, accounting, and reporting obligations that apply to you.

Taxes and Payroll — What Oikos Books Does and Does Not Do. Oikos Books keeps your books. It does not compute, withhold, remit, or file your taxes. Payroll taxes are withheld and filed by your payroll provider (for example Gusto or ADP) or by you; Oikos Books records the resulting amounts in your books as summary totals. Income, sales, and other taxes are filed by you or your accountant. The Service organizes information — including 1099 and year-end figures — so that you or your professional can file; it does not file anything with the IRS or any state or local authority on your behalf, and it does not determine what you owe. Nothing the Service produces is a tax return, a tax determination, or tax advice.

No Guarantee of Results; Assumption of Risk. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Oikos United LLC disclaims all liability for any loss, penalty, interest, fine, missed deadline, rejected filing, overpayment, underpayment, lost data, or business decision arising from your use of, or reliance on, the Service or anything it produces. You assume all risk of relying on the Service's output without independent professional verification. This section survives termination and is in addition to, not in place of, the general limitation-of-liability and warranty-disclaimer sections of the Terms.

Interest and Money Owed to You. If you use the Service to record money that someone owes you at interest (a note receivable), you are the lender, not Oikos United LLC. The Service works out interest and the split between interest and principal from the terms you enter. It does not suggest a rate, it does not check that your rate or terms are lawful where you or the borrower are, and it does not produce any disclosure a lender may be required to give. Lending to consumers, and in some states regularly financing other businesses, can be regulated; whether any of that applies to you is yours to confirm. Interest and amortization figures are for your convenience only, on the same footing as every other figure the Service produces.

2. The short reminders you'll see in the app

Plain-language versions of the same points, shown where you could reasonably rely on a number. We describe them here in substance rather than quoting them word for word, because the in-app wording is improved from time to time; the meaning below does not change without this page changing too. There is deliberately no reminder on every screen: legal text that never goes away stops being read.

• When you first set up. Oikos Books helps you keep your own books. It does not give tax, legal, or accounting advice; your numbers, filings, and decisions stay your responsibility, and when it matters you should check with an accountant.
• On reports and financial statements, on screen and on the printed page. Reports are built from what you entered, Oikos Books does not check your numbers, and you should review them before you file, share, or rely on them.
• On estimated-tax and tax-preparation screens. These are estimates and organized figures, not tax advice. Oikos Books does not compute your actual tax, file, or pay anything for you; confirm amounts with a qualified tax professional.
• Under every Oikos AI answer. Oikos AI can be wrong. Answers are generated automatically and are not professional advice; double-check anything important before acting on it.
• On statement import. Imported and auto-categorized transactions are suggestions. Statement data can be delayed, duplicated, or miscategorized, so review them.
• On the payroll panel. Your payroll provider withholds, files, and pays. Oikos Books only records the runs in your books and files or pays nothing.
• On the 1099 and year-end panel. Oikos Books organizes your 1099 and year-end totals; you or your accountant review and file them.
• Where a vendor is marked for a 1099. Whether someone is a contractor or an employee is a tax determination with real consequences, and Oikos Books does not make it. Family members and people who work for you regularly are the most common places this goes wrong, so check with your accountant.
• On labour tracking, if you track hours by person. It is a cost record, not a payroll record: it puts hours and labour cost on the right job, decides nobody's employment status, calculates no withholding, and files nothing.
• On notes receivable, if you record money owed to you at interest. Interest is worked out from the terms you typed in, without checking that those terms are lawful, and is not legal, tax, or lending advice. Where a note is created, the app also says it is built for money another business owes you, and that financing a consumer, or regularly financing businesses, can bring rules and disclosures Oikos Books does not handle.
